This year’s student-led evangelistic series InTents—hosted by the Walla Walla University School of Theology—offered six nights of worship, each led by a different student providing their unique take on the theme “You Are Not Alone.”
InTents has been a blessing to campus for over 30 years. The familiar sight of that large striped tent brings joy to numerous students as they gather underneath to connect with God and one another. “It’s a week of building community and reminding each student that they are wanted, welcomed, and precious to this campus,” said Shamara Daniels, senior theology major and one of this year’s InTents speakers.
On the sixth night of InTents, Daniels presented “BittHER.” Her sermon held a heavy emphasis on the raw aspect of spirituality because of the moments in her life when being alone was unbearable, terrifying, and reminded her of how human she is. For her peers who hold similar experiences, she said, “I wanted to give the congregation this year something real, deep, and truly from my heart to show them that this life does not have to be lonely; it can be full!”
Every year, InTents is produced by the students of the Public Evangelism class—taught by Pedrito Maynard-Reid, professor of Biblical studies and missiology—who decide how to make the meetings relevant to the students of that year. Though the message may change with the times, the significance of the in-person connection that InTents brings has not been lost on any involved. Even with the rise of digital evangelism, Maynard-Reid believes that there remains a need for community in all facets of Christian life and gospel.
While preparing for InTents and creating his sermon, “God’s Security vs. Our Insecurity,” Jonathan Alvarez, senior theology major, said the biggest lesson he learned was that he can’t do life by himself, even as an introvert. This need for community is why he believes that in-person evangelism is so important. He said, “Jesus of Nazareth travelled from village to village, meeting people, giving them hope, and helping and healing them. He is the greatest example of evangelism, and He did it in person.”
This year’s program included Jonathan Galindo sharing “Step out the Boat,” M.J. Metuli with “A Call That Never Lets Go,” Jonathan Alvarez presenting “God’s Security vs. Our Insecurity,” Ashley Davila speaking about “God’s Pursuit of an Anxious Heart,” David Sierra with “In Your Shoes,” and Shamara Daniels with “BittHER.”
