In early July, the Wolves men’s and women’s golf teams traveled to St. Andrews, Scotland, to visit the Home of Golf. The ten-day Scotland Golf Trip combined learning about the cultural history of Scotland with getting to enjoy playing the national sport of Scotland on its most iconic and historic links.
“I've always dreamed of playing golf in Scotland and as soon as I heard about this opportunity I wanted to go,” said Andrew Payne, freshman business, pre-dentistry major. The trip did not disappoint. He enjoyed playing each new course, touring Edinburgh Castle, and said his favorite part was meeting and golfing with so many new people.
Kaitlyn Miclette, sophomore exercise science major, joined this trip to “experience the culture and atmosphere that was shaped by some of the most famous golfers in the 1800's.” She loved getting to play golf nearly every day on some of the oldest courses in the world and growing closer to her team.
Nestor Osorio, director of athletics, led the trip as a collaboration between Wolves golf and the Walla Walla University Department of History and Philosophy. Students could earn four general studies history credits—upper or lower division—taught by Gregg Dodds, department chair and professor of history.
“Learning about the past really comes alive when you can visit the places where major historical events happened,” said Dodds. “The perfect classroom is getting to travel with students physically back into the past through a history tour.”
Participants got to golf five St. Andrews Links courses, tour the R&A World Golf Museum, visit St. Giles’ Cathedral, and much more. Beyond academics and athletics, Osorio said, “my favorite thing to see were the relationships that were built among the team and amongst those who joined.”
The annual Wolves golf trip is a unique opportunity for both teams to play the sport they love on new, beautiful courses while making lasting memories with teammates. The trip’s location differs from year to year and alternates between domestic and international.
Next year, the teams will travel to the Monterey Peninsula, California, to play the renowned courses of Pebble Beach Resort, and the summer of 2027 will take them back to the United Kingdom.
