Community of faith

Campus Ministries looks ahead to new opportunities for worship, discipleship, and student involvement.

Campus Ministries at Walla Walla University is looking toward the year ahead with a continued focus on helping students grow in faith, build community, and take active roles in ministry.

Emily Ellis, new WWU chaplain, sees WWU’s Adventist identity and student-led programs as creating a distinctive opportunity for spiritual growth. “Campus Ministries on this campus is far-reaching, providing worship and discipleship opportunities that touch the whole campus,” Ellis said. “There is so much potential for impact, particularly because so many of these ministries are led by incredible students.” Ellis is especially excited to work alongside the student missions chaplain and the students who serve on the Campus Ministries team.

At the heart of her vision is a desire for students to encounter God’s character and grace. “My hope and prayer for the students on this campus is that they experience the kindness and beauty of God through Campus Ministries,” Ellis said. She points to Ephesians 1:7–8, which describes the redemption, forgiveness, and grace found in Christ. Ellis hopes students will come to understand and experience those promises personally during their time at WWU.

As she begins her work, Ellis’ first goal is simple: getting to know the people who make up the campus community. “There are so many wonderful people on campus, and I would love to have a connection with all of them,” she said. Students can connect with Campus Ministries in many ways, including worship programs, service opportunities, and small groups. Ellis particularly encourages students to consider becoming small group leaders.

“It is a great way to get to know new students and to serve in an area that you are passionate about,” she said. “We are at our best when we are in community, and I can’t think of a better way to get involved, make an impact, and live in community than being part of a small group.”

Ellis’ approach to ministry grows from two closely connected interests: people and theology. “My heart is to be with people, whether it’s through a planned meeting or simply passing by,” she said. “At the same time, I have a deep love for reading, studying, and learning about theology.”

For Ellis, serving as a campus chaplain brings those passions together. “It is truly an honor to be a minister and to do work that combines these two loves,” she said. “Not a day goes by that I take it for granted.”
