Four Year Plan

First Year: You're Here, Let's Go

  • Join JumpStart to get an inside look at campus life and department resources. Learn more at wallawalla.edu/jumpstart
  • Find a job on campus at wallawalla.edu/jobscene. Think tutoring, lab assistant, even helping out in media production.
  • Meet with your advisor. They’ll help you plan your schedule, register each quarter, and answer all your “what now?” questions.

Tip: Don’t wait until registration to talk to your advisor. Check in early and often.

Sophomore Year: Start Expanding

  • Explore a minor if you haven’t already. Check in with your advisor for guidance.
  • Stay connected through department emails, event posters, and updates on the WWU website and social channels.

Junior Year: Start Getting Real-World Ready

  • Colloquiums matter — attend each quarter and start collecting those credits.
  • Begin your internship search. Most students do theirs during the summer, but school-year internships are an option too.
  • Eligible for Lambda Pi Eta? If your GPA is high enough, you’ll be invited to join this national honor society.

Internships: Real Experience, Real Connections
Every Comm major completes at least one internship before graduation. You’ll use Handshake to register and track your internship — and the Student Development Center will walk you through the steps.

Internships count for academic credit, look great on a resume, and often lead directly to job offers. Get started early, especially if you want one during the school year.

Colloquium: Beyond the Classroom
Each quarter, the department hosts speakers, panels, and professional events. These give you an edge — and they’re required for graduation. Make sure you sign in at each one to get credit.

Lambda Pi Eta: The Honors Society
If your GPA qualifies, you’ll be invited to join Lambda Pi Eta (Nu Zeta chapter). It’s about more than recognition — it’s a national network of communication pros and students like you. Think: events, conferences, leadership opportunities, and grad school prep.

Senior Year: Finish Strong

  • Complete your internship and stay plugged in to networking events like the Society of Adventist Communicators convention.
  • Begin your senior project early. This is your chance to create something that showcases everything you’ve learned.
  • Apply for graduation about three quarters before your final term. Search “12 Clicks to Graduation” on the WWU website.

Senior Project: Your Capstone Experience

This is where everything comes together. Your senior project is a deep dive into something that matters to you — and it proves you’re ready to take your skills beyond the classroom.

What it includes:

  • A detailed proposal
  • Advisor meetings and feedback
  • A final portfolio and presentation to the department
  • Real results, whether that’s a campaign, production, or research project

Start planning early. This is your chance to shine.
