ASWWU hosts third annual Multicultural Festival

This April, the Associated Students of Walla Walla University (ASWWU) hosted their third annual Multicultural Festival in the Winter Educational Complex. Students, staff, and community members were all invited to participate in the festivities.

The event started at 7 p.m. with various cultural dishes provided by Walla Walla University’s affinity clubs. As the night continued, highlights included a flag march, trivia games, and cultural dances from across the world.

Asian Pacific Islander Club president, Jonah Alvarado, gave a behind-the-scenes look at his role in the event. According to Alvarado, WWU’s affinity clubs begin planning the event at the start of the school in September.

“This year, my role was to be in charge of the food aspect of the event,” said Alvarado. “Me and my team reached out to our local church and student community to gather help in food preparation as well as cooking several dishes for the festival.”

Alvarado’s favorite part of the celebration was dancing with the Filipino tinikling group. Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance that uses bamboo poles. “It was fun to participate in my culture and dance with friends,” said Alvarado.

Alvarado hopes that next year even more students will get involved in the multicultural performances. “There are so many cultures out there and I would love to see them proudly represented by our students here at our university.”
