Community Emergency Response Team

Walla Walla University is proud to have brought the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program to our community. CERT teaches people how to better prepare themselves for everything from neighborhood hazards to regional emergencies. This national program has produced over 600,000 volunteers ready to be activated in the event of a disaster. The university's Center for Humanitarian Engagement (CHE) partnered with Walla Walla County Emergency Management (WWCEM) in 2023 to offer annual trainings to community members and students, resulting in the start of a local team in 2025.

New members are encouraged to attend team meetings before becoming certified. Walla Walla Valley CERT meets monthly for planning, training, mock disaster response, or other emergency preparedness activities. Annual CERT courses hosted by the university are free and open to ages 13 and older, with course supplies provided at no cost thanks to CHE and Adventist Community Services.
