Speaker Maggie Downs

Maggie Downs is a journalist and the author of two books, the instant Amazon bestseller BRAVER THAN YOU THINK and 50 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU’RE FIVE, a guide to gentle family adventures. With a focus on outdoor adventure, wellness, and meaningful travel experiences, Maggie seeks to inspire others to engage with the world in purposeful ways. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University’s Scripps School of Journalism and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the University of California, Riverside - Palm Desert. As a daily newspaper journalist, Maggie received a number of accolades, including multiple Best of Gannett awards, and was named best columnist in Ohio by the Associated Press. In her freelance career, Maggie has been widely published in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the Toronto Star, in addition to such travel publications as Afar, Travel + Leisure, Outside, and BBC Travel. A finalist for the Ohioana award in nonfiction, she is a frequent contributor to Palm Springs Life magazine and is a columnist for McSweeney’s.
