When CNN needed an expert on octopus behavior, they called Walla Walla University’s own Kirt Onthank, professor of biology and octopus expert. Onthank was featured in a national news segment this week, offering insight into the unique behavior of these mysterious sea creatures.
This isn’t the first time national media have sought out Onthank’s expertise—he was also featured by NBC last year and has contributed to research covered by outlets including Popular Science and ScienceAlert. Whether it’s energy use in octopus camouflage or helping the public better understand marine life, Onthank’s work continues to reach far beyond the classroom.
That kind of real-world credibility is built into WWU’s marine biology experience, where students get the chance to learn alongside expert faculty like Onthank in the lab, in the field, and in the water. Through immersive summer courses at the university’s premier marine biology facility Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory on the Salish Sea, students dive into hands-on research in tide pools, saltwater tanks, and open water. With top-tier facilities at Rosario, a dedicated marine biology degree, and world-class professors, it’s never been a better time to study marine biology at WWU.
