Spring Choral Concert

Annual concert focuses on the theme of light

On Saturday, May 17 at 5 p.m., the WWU music department will present its Spring Choral Concert with performances from University Singers and ICantori of Walla Walla University accompanied by the Walla Walla University Chamber Orchestra.

Directed by Kraig Scott, professor of music, the night will focus on the theme of light—God’s first act of creation from Genesis 1:3. One piece in particular, titled Missa in tempore belli and written by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, focuses on the contrast between darkness and light. Composed in 1796, Haydn watched as his country prepared to fight against the French Revolution. Translated to “Mass in time of war,” Missa in tempore belli includes parts that seem menacing, but concludes with the message that light will always win over darkness.

Other performances will include songs like This Little Light of Mine, Let There Be Light by Craig Courtney, and a special piece titled Magnificat written by Andrew Jacobson, a Seattle based composer, who created the song in August of 2024 specifically for ICantori

The concert will be performed in the University Church, located at 212 SW Fourth St., College Place. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information on this concert and other upcoming performances, please visit wallawalla.edu/music
