Spreading the good word

The School of Theology produces podcast to offer insightful Biblical discussions worldwide

The Walla Walla University School of Theology’s “The Good Word” podcast is a long-standing project that offers weekly 13-minute discussions hosted by the department’s faculty, exploring biblical and theological topics that are Bible-based, Christ-centered, and faith-strengthening.

The podcast allows the School of Theology to extend its reach beyond the classroom, offering thoughtful reflection on the Seventh-day Adventist Adult Bible Study Guide to listeners around the world. Carl Cosaert, department dean and professor of Biblical studies: Greek and New Testament, called it a “meaningful way we contribute to the spiritual and theological conversation within and beyond our local community.”

While the episodes are hosted by various School of Theology faculty, they also include guest speakers from across departments and even beyond the university. Cosaert said each guest is specifically chosen based on their background and perspective to enrich the discussion and bring a variety of insights to the week’s topic.

The podcast’s most recent guest was James Ash, Stateline Adventist Church pastor, who joined a series of episodes hosted by Brant Berglin, associate professor of Biblical studies: Greek and New Testament. Berglin and Ash are long-time friends and Berglin asked Ash to guest-speak because “I can rely on him to provide sound and enthusiastic Biblical conversation on most topics, especially those presented this quarter concerning prophetic material.”

This year’s guests have also included local individuals like Albert Handal, Alex Bryan, and Andreas Beccai. However, the podcast often invites other WWU faculty as guests so “people can know we have faith-based teachers on campus,” said Berglin.

This podcast has been an important project for the School of Theology for several decades with the earliest archived episodes coming from 1999.
