WWU athletics program adds men's varsity golf team

The Walla Walla University athletics program is adding men's golf as the sixth championship sport as the Wolves transition to the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) in the upcoming 2015-16 school year.

“A couple of years ago, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics mandated that all of their members needed to sponsor six ‘champion sports.’ WWU only sponsored five. So we knew we had to add at least one sport,” said Gerry Larson, the Wolves athletic director.

While contemplating this transition, the athletic department understood that in the history of WWU, female athletes have had more potential playing opportunities than their male counterparts. “It became apparent that we were in need of a handful of male athlete opportunities,” said Larson.

With this in mind, men’s golf was added to the Wolves roster beginning in the upcoming 2015-16 school year.

Rodd Strobel, the coach for the Wolves golf team, said, “I want my players to be better people because of the competitive golf experience. I believe that the discipline and effort that is required to improve as a golfer directly translates into everyday life. Attributes that make great golfers like balance, self-motivation, integrity, emotional control, accountability, and responsibility will serve my athletes well in every area of their lives.”

“In addition,” says Strobel, “the team will spend a lot of time working on developing their golf game. Everything from ball striking and bunker play to course management and putting will be practiced in the weeks leading up to the first tournament in September.”

Strobel looks forward to the competitive aspects the golf team will experience in their upcoming season. He expects the competition to be both challenging and rewarding, an opportunity to see where the team excels and the areas that still need work.

The team will play tournaments both within the CCC and with non-conference schools, such as Lewis-Clark State College.

The first tournament will be hosted by The Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Ore., and will be held Monday and Tuesday, September 21-22. A full schedule can be found on the WWU athletics page,
