Classical guitar recital to feature works by Machaut, Purcell, and Bach

Albert Diaz, interim associate chair for the Walla Walla University music department, along with Michael Kudirka, a professor at Arkansas State University, will present a recital on Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in the Melvin K. West Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

“Our ensemble, Double Helix, is a guitar duo which performs works in their historic tuning. We play on special guitars which allow us to play in the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque temperaments. The program will move through time and temperament, examining how chords, sonorities, and their color, changed over time,” said Diaz.

Diaz is the associate chair of the WWU music department and an assistant professor of music. He has a bachelor of music degree and master of music degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Southern California. He also has a master of arts in musicology from the University of California in Los Angeles, where he is currently working on a doctorate in musicology.

Kudirka teaches at Arkansas State University. He has taught at an array of schools including academies, universities, and summer camps. He received his bachelor of music degree and his doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music, as well as his master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts.

Diaz and Kudirka will be including pieces from Machaut, des Prez, da Milano, Dowland, Purcell, and Bach in their recital on Thursday. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event at the Fine Arts Center, 200 S. College Ave., College Place.
