Evensong

Sundown service to feature sacred music and the spoken word

The Walla Walla University Department of Music will host an Evensong service on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. in the University Church, 212 SW Fourth Street in College Place.

Evensong is a program that combines the spoken word with selections of music for a simple and sacred closing to the Sabbath. The event will feature pieces by Olivier Messiaen, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ernst Pepping, and others performed on the University Church Casavant-Frères organ by Kraig Scott, WWU professor of music. Spoken word will be provided by Montgomery Buell.

For more than 50 years, Evensong has been a cherished part of the WWU musical culture. “We present this quiet, sundown worship service about eight or nine times each year,” said Scott. “It is always timed to coincide with sundown, so the start times vary. The format is simple—music interspersed with readings.”

Evensong is free and open to the public.
