Distinguished Service Award presented to WWU professor of biblical studies

Pedrito Maynard-Reid, Walla Walla University professor of biblical studies, ombudsman, and assistant to the president for diversity, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Oakwood University Pastoral Evangelism and Leadership Council. The award was presented in December 2019 in the Oakwood University Church at the 40th anniversary celebration of the PELC.

“I was shocked, surprised, and humbled to be chosen for such an award,” said Maynard-Reid. “The recipients of this award are usually retired stalwarts from the African American community who have long and stellar years of accomplishments and contributions in the Seventh-day Adventist church and beyond. I’m still on the journey attempting to walk in their footsteps as they walked in Jesus’ footsteps.”

Maynard-Reid joined the faculty at WWU in 1990. He has a bachelor of theology degree from West Indies College (now Northern Caribbean University); master of arts, master of divinity, and doctor of theology degrees from Andrews University; and a master of theology degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. He has published and contributed to many books on the subjects of evangelism, worship, and biblical studies, particularly on the biblical book of James.

Throughout his career, Maynard-Reid has taught at West Indies College and Antillian University and has held evangelistic meetings in the Philippines, Ghana, Tanzania, and Jamaica. He works to pass on his passion for evangelism to his students through his classes at WWU and by involving them in the work of the PELC. Each year since 1992 he has taken WWU theology students to the PELC conference where they can experience firsthand the work and vision of the Council.
