Pedrito Maynard-Reid, professor of biblical studies, has been appointed to a cross-cultural professorship at the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies (IWS) in Jacksonville, Florida. As part of the professorship, Maynard-Reid will teach a 6-hour master’s-level course titled “Cross-cultural perspectives in Christian worship.” The course is taught during two one-week intensive sessions each year at the beginning of January and mid-June.
Maynard-Reid is recognized as an expert in missiology, cross-cultural and multicultural perspectives, inculturation, and contextualization.
“I think my selection to the professorship is due in part to the impact of my book, “Diverse Worship: African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic Perspective,” which is in its 10th printing and is used worldwide in seminaries and schools of religion,” says Maynard-Reid.
In the book, Maynard-Reid explores the multiethnic dimensions of worship by looking specifically at African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic cultural contexts. He colorfully describes and characterizes each worship tradition and explores its historical development and change, proposing a new perspective on what it means to worship God.
IWS was recently chosen as editor’s pick by Worship Leader magazine for the sixth consecutive year. It is a small theology graduate school with approximately 180 master’s and doctoral students from around the globe who gather twice a year to study the biblical, theological, historical, cultural, and missiological foundations of Christian worship.
Maynard-Reid has authored several books on contemporary worship, holistic evangelism, and the book of James. He was vice president for Spiritual Life and Mission from 1999 to 2008 and has been assistant to the president for diversity since 2008. He also serves as the WWU ombudsman.
