On July 31, Walla Walla University Athletics was named a NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Award Winner at the gold level. WWU was one of 131 colleges to earn gold status, and received a perfect score of 100 points on the Champions of Character scorecard for the first time in the program’s entire history.
WWU President Alex Bryan says, “I am proud of the Christ-like commitment of our coaches and athletes to live up to a high standard of personal and collective integrity. Adventist education has always valued the integration of mind, body, and spirit—human beings as whole people, seeking to live the way of Jesus.”
To become a Champions of Character institution, schools are measured on demonstrated commitment to character training, sportsmanlike conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Athletic Director Nestor Osorio says he is proud of each WWU team's efforts to make this happen—recognizing the months of community service initiatives, sportsmanship awards, and no red cards or ejections. He also notes the countless efforts WWU athletes have made towards academic excellence and maintaining an overall program GPA of 3.17.
