Black history celebration

Guest speakers and gospel music at WWU to kick off Black History Month events

A Black History Weekend Celebration will take place at Walla Walla University Friday, Jan. 31, through Saturday, Feb. 1. Events will include guest speakers and a variety of musical options including a gospel choir. Weekend highlights will feature:

• Mass Choir master class and rehearsal, Friday, Jan. 31, 6 p.m.—A master class and rehearsal of the Mass Choir will be led by Andrew (Benji) Young, associate professor and long-time director of Dynamic Praise at Oakwood University. This is Young’s seventh year as guest conductor for Black History Weekend Celebration at WWU. All interested parties are invited to join the Mass Choir.
University Church, basement choir room, 212 S.W. Fourth St., College Place, Wash.

• First Serve, Sabbath, Feb. 1, 9:30 a.m.— Byron Dulan, vice president for regional and multicultural ministries and human relations for the North Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, will speak for the First Serve church service.
University Church, main sanctuary, 212 S.W. Fourth St., College Place, Wash.

• Berean Fellowship, Sabbath, Feb. 1, 10:15 a.m.—Dilys Brooks, chaplain for Loma Linda University, will speak for the weekly Berean Fellowship meeting.
WWU Fine Arts Center, auditorium, 200 S. College Ave., College Place, Wash.

• Second Service, Sabbath, Feb. 1, 11:40 a.m.—Dilys Brooks, chaplain for Loma Linda University, will speak for the Second Service church service. Music will be provided by the Mass Choir and the Portland Adventist Academy Gospel Choir.

• Total Praise Festival of Choirs, Sabbath, Feb. 1, 4:30 p.m.—This afternoon concert will feature music by the Mass Choir and the Portland Adventist Academy Gospel Choir.

Black History Weekend Celebration events are free and open to the public.
