Becoming a better writer

Guest lecturer Anne Ruggles Gere to present “Half Truths about Writing”

##

Anne Ruggles Gere, professor of English language and literature and professor of education at the University of Michigan, will present “Half Truths about Writing” at Walla Walla University in the Administration Building, room 117, on May 2, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The “Half Truths about Writing” presentation invites attendees to reconsider some common assumptions about writing in order to use it more effectively across all disciplines and to help students become better writers. This talk draws on her 2019 publication of “Developing Writers in Higher Education: A Longitudinal Study” as well as her project on integrating writing-to-learn pedagogies into large-enrollment gateway courses in STEM.

WWU English professor Susan Gardner says, “I’m excited about Dr. Gere’s presentation that focuses on the importance of writing across disciplines, not just in English classes, since writing is so significant to college success and future careers.”

Gere, as well as being a distinguished professor, is also the director of the Sweetland Center for Writing and co-chair of the joint doctoral program in English and education at the University of Michigan. She is a renowned and nationally known scholar with over a hundred articles and a dozen books that highlight both scholarship and teaching excellence, the importance of writing, and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

In partnership with Walla Walla University, Gere will also be presenting at the Walla Walla Public Library. Her presentation, “Preserving Cultures: Native American Women Teachers in Boarding Schools,” is based on the book she is currently writing. This event will be on May 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. To find more information about the event, visit the WWPL website

Both events will be open to the public. The Administration Building is located on 204 S. College Ave., College Place.
