STEM Meet Up

Upcoming job fair to help STEM majors network

On Thursday, Feb. 15, the Student Development Center will host a career and internship fair for Walla Walla University students with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. Participants can expect to chat with representatives from graduate schools and potential employers any time from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Chan Shun Pavilion Fishbowl.

The STEM Meet Up is the second of three recruitment fairs put on by the SDC this year. Each networking event focuses on a different type of profession, breaking away from the tradition of hosting a catch-all career fair once each year. This allows students to network with field-specific professionals, explore career options, and inquire about relevant internships.

Douglas Logan, dean of the Edward F. Cross School of Engineering, believes that students of all ages will benefit from networking in this environment. “Even if they’re freshmen, they need to be exploring opportunities for what they can do after they graduate,” Logan said. “They need to be developing attitudes and skills that will enhance their success.”

Rob Frohne, professor of engineering at WWU, agrees that the career and internship fair is important. “Networking with people is the number one way to land a job,” he said. “Students should take every opportunity to do it.”

A number of schools and employers are sending recruiters to the event, including University of Washington Tacoma, U.S. Navy Seattle, and Key Technology. Students are encouraged to dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their resumes to hand out at the meet up.
