Academic Programs

The Department of Visual Arts offers three bachelor of fine art (B.F.A.) degrees, an associate degree, and four minors. A B.F.A. degree is set apart from other undergraduate degrees by the large amount of hands-on studio time included, and the chance to collaborate and explore all the visual arts.

As a B.F.A. major, you will choose from several options in related fields of study to wholistically prepare for your career. These options, called cognate tracks, include business, communication, drama, technology, or a study abroad program. Film majors can study for a semester in Hollywood through the LA Film Studies Center. WWU is the only Adventist university with this partnership.

Film major (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

To get a B.F.A. in film, you will take core classes in creativity and visual storytelling but will also complete studio hours that help develop your craft while preparing portfolio pieces. A film degree will prepare you to work at all stages of film production. You will augment your studies with LA film studies, business, communication, study abroad courses, or drama courses.

Fine Art major (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

As a B.F.A. in fine arts major, you will take core classes in creative foundations and visual storytelling. You will also complete studio hours that hone skills in a chosen art form and prioritize collaboration across majors. You will expand your study through a chosen cognate track for well-rounded career preparation.

Graphic Design major (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

To pursue a B.F.A. in graphic design, you will take core classes in creativity and visual storytelling, but also complete studio hours strengthening collaboration skills. You will learn to use visuals to reach an intended audience with a specific message, often through branding development, publication design, packaging, photography, or web design. You will be able to expand your study through a chosen cognate track.

Visual Arts specialization (Associate of Fine Arts)

An A.F.A. in visual arts will allow you to get technical and occupational preparation in film and tv, art, design, and visual arts. An associate degree program typically takes two years, and does not include extensive studio hours or a cognate track.
