Season opener

Wolves men’s basketball faces off against Whitman in first home game of the season

On Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7:00 p.m., the Walla Walla University men’s basketball team will face off against Whitman College in their first home game of the season. The game will be held in the Winter Education Complex. The event is open to the public, however spectators are required to wear masks in compliance with the Washington state indoor face covering mandate.

Basketball coach Brandon Broome said regarding this weekend’s game, “I’m looking forward to being in action again, we have been away for a long time. We are excited to be competing with Whitman. Our institutions work together on various projects so there is a lot of love there. I’m hoping this is the beginning of a friendly rivalry for years to come. It's going to be a great game!”

The Wolves team is made up of five lower classmen and ten upperclassmen. Broome said, “The energy on the court so far is high energy, sometimes erratic. The excitement is very high and we are so happy to be back in action that we occasionally lose sight of the details.”

As the season gets underway, Coach Broome explains some of his goals. “Practice works. There is no big secret to improving and it doesn’t take a genius to master anything. The only requirement is practice. If you put in the work you will reap the reward.”

It’s rewarding to watch a team play well together, and communication is key to getting that to happen. “I have two favorite moments in a game,” explained Broome. “When I call a timeout or have the opportunity to make an adjustment and it works, euphoria! And that look between players when they connect on a given play. Magic!”

Seasons bring challenges and the team is looking forward to how to face and respond to them. “Our goals this season are simple,” said Broome. “We want to be Cascade Collegiate Conference Champions. There is a lot of work to be done to reach that goal but that is what we are going for.”
