WWU to partner with Whitman, Blue Mountain Action Council for MLK celebration


On Monday, January 15, at 11:40 a.m., Walla Walla University will hold a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in the University Church featuring speaker Timothy J. Golden. Join us for Golden’s presentation, titled “Life and Legacy: Overcoming the Cultural Memory of Dr. King.”

Golden was a long-time philosophy professor at WWU and is now a visiting professor at Whitman College. His academic qualifications include a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Memphis and a master’s degree in philosophy from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Before coming to WWU, Golden practiced law in the U.S. Court of Appeals; and he has two published books, the most recent being “Racism and Resistance: Essays on Derrick Bell’s Racial Realism.” 

Legacy walk with Whitman College 
Further events for Martin Luther King Jr. day will include a legacy walk sponsored by both Whitman College and Walla Walla University. Community members are welcome to join Whitman and WWU students at 1:30 p.m. at the Reid Campus Center, 280 Boyer Ave., Walla Walla. From there, participants will walk to the Gesa Power House Theatre, 111 N 6th Ave., Walla Walla, to enjoy a musical performance presenting recording artist Chris Pierce. 

Love in Action: Build a backpack events
In the afternoon, the Center for Humanitarian Engagement at WWU is sponsoring two service events in honor of MLK day. These events will provide the opportunity for participants to build backpacks that will supply food to local children. The first event will be at 3 p.m. at the Blue Mountain Action Council Food Bank, 921 W Cherry St., Walla Walla. The second event will be at 6 p.m. in the Student Association Center in Kellogg Hall, 204 S College Ave., College Place. 

These events are free and open to the public.
