In full swing

Athletics teams continue season since summer arrival

In early August while most students are still on break, the students of various sports teams are returning to start their season. Teams that return early include soccer, volleyball, cross country, and golf. Soccer had its first game nearly five weeks before the start of school, and the volleyball team played 13 games before classes began.

Now that classes are in full swing, student athletes are excited to have more fan support at their games. Summer Boulais, a senior strategic communications major and volleyball athlete, encouraged those interested to “come, get hype, and have fun.” The volleyball team has two upcoming home games on October 28 and 29.

Other sports, including golf and soccer also have upcoming games. Soccer will be playing in College Place on October 21 at 2 p.m. and October 23 at 1 p.m. Golf will be playing on October 24th and October 25th. Upcoming meets for cross country include the women's championship on November 4th.

Jordan Manteghi, sports information director, said the athletics teams have faced a lot of change in the last few years and that the student-athletes have shown a tremendous ability to adapt and change. She said of the sports season, “I do think that athletes have to find new ways to balance their time.”

Boulais agreed that their commitment to sports during the summer is different than during the school year, when athletes have to balance classes and academic work. From her experience on the volleyball team, she describes it as a welcoming team with kind teammates. Boulais highly recommends those who are considering joining a sport to talk to the coach, players, and join.
