Position Summary

Directs, in consultation with the Campus Chaplain and Awakening sponsor, the weekly Awakening worship service on Sabbath mornings. Provides leadership to the Core Team of volunteers to craft contemporary worship services weekly that are relevant, creative, and engaging to the WWU student community. Works with Core Team to regularly recruit volunteers to assist with the many facets of the Awakening ministry, and under the direction of the Campus Chaplain in consultation with the Core Team, makes necessary budgetary decisions. Keeps track of all the Awakening equipment and collaborates with other ministries out of the Chaplain’s Office to provide quality programming and ministry opportunities.


Essential Responsibilities

  1. Works with the Campus Chaplain and Campus Ministries team to identify and implement opportunities to reach out to the students of WWU in order to connect them with the gospel of Jesus Christ in the context of an Adventist university campus.
  2. Maintains a regular devotional life with Christ, growing in a knowledge of and experience with His Word, the Spirit, and the grace of God.
  3. Responds, in coordination with the Campus Chaplain, to campus emergencies and ministry needs related to students in crisis.
  4. Develops and recommends students to be considered by the Campus Chaplain for leadership positions for the following year.
  5. Reports weekly to the Campus Chaplain via weekly meetings and ministry reports.
  6. Communicates regularly with the Campus Chaplain and Campus Ministries office concerning work hours, promoting events, and job related needs or concerns.
  7. Maintains strict confidentiality concerning information discussed or records shared that involve fellow students, faculty, or staff and other life situations.
  8. Intentionally makes one’s presence known to students in his/her assigned area of ministry
  9. Works to build up their assigned ministry area via mission and vision statements as well as yearly goals in coordination with the Spiritual Life Executive Committee.
  10. Participates in required training and leadership development including annual leadership retreat, weekly leadership discussions, and other opportunities as assigned by the Chaplain.
  11. Attends the yearly NAD Campus Ministries Convention during Spring Break, if so asked to do so by the Campus Chaplain.
  12. Works with Campus Ministries & Student Missions office to stay current on WWU offerings, policies and procedures.
  13. Adheres to WWU’s policies for conduct, daily processes and risk management.

    • Upholds WWU’s code of conduct and standards.
    • Uses WWU’s timekeeping, data collecting and reporting systems consistently and with discretion.
    • Abides by WWU’s risk management and safety policies.
  14. Maintains a working understanding of the budget and works with Campus Chaplain to remain in budget and to request funds if needed.
  15. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of WWU senior management, formally or informally, orally or in writing.


Essential Responsibilities – Asst Chaplain Specific

  1. Chairs the weekly Awakening Core Team meetings.
  2. Monitors the theology and teachings of the Awakening service to remain in cohesion with core Christian-Adventist beliefs.
  3. Works collaboratively with the Core to plan weekly themes, recruit student speakers, determine offerings (in advance of the service and keeping in mind the needs of the operating budget for the Awakening service), and strengthen the community of Awakening volunteers.
  4. Provides mentoring for the weekly speakers in coordination with other pastors as needed.
  5. Tracks and cares for the Awakening equipment.
  6. Promotes weekly Awakening services by communicating with University Church, Campus Ministries, and graphic designer in an appropriate manner.
  7. Builds relationships with University Church pastoral staff to promote a healthy connection between the church and the Awakening, and to collaborate on ministry opportunities that could potentially encourage inter-generational connections.
  8. Regularly recruits new volunteers, along with Core Team, and works to build up Awakening Core team for future leadership, as well as identifying a potential leader, no later than the end of Winter Quarter of term, to take over Awakening Coordinator position for the following year.


Required Meetings & Record Keeping

CM Core1 (weekly) – One hour in duration with other assistant chaplains as chaired by the Campus Chaplain for the purpose of prayer, support, encouragement, and reporting of what’s happening in assigned ministry area as well as the supervisory ministry.

Awakening Core Team Meeting (weekly) – Sixty to ninety minutes in duration to assess previous week’s Awakening service and plan for the immediate service following that meeting, as well as planning for the future and dealing with administrative needs as necessary. 

All Staff Meetings (once/month) – Two hours in duration with the entire Campus Ministries staff in order to fellowship and provide opportunities for prayer, encouragement, problem-solving, and support.

Job Specifications

Student Status – Must be a full-time student (12 credit hour minimum) for the duration of employment.

Licensure/Certification – None required


  • Strong passion for Christian ministry in a team-oriented environment.
  • Previous experience with Awakening ministry REQUIRED
  • Exceptional social/interpersonal skills a must—clear ability to convey information positively and in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to maintain communications and manage multiple projects on deadline as directed.
  • Experience or coursework in areas of ministry, communications, or public relations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel a must.
