Mission Statement – DRAFT

The mission of the E. L. Mabley Archives is to:

  • Serve as a centralized institutional archives and historical information research center for the Walla Walla University community;
  • Facilitate the efficient management of documents in all formats produced by college departments and offices through a records management program;
  • Provide facilities for the preservation and research use of such records;
  • Identify, appraise, organize, preserve, and make available for research use Walla Walla University records of administrative and historic value.

Collection Development Policy – DRAFT

·         The goal of E. L. Mabley Archives is to identify, select, acquire, preserve, and provide access to a comprehensive collection of publications, institutional records, and historically valuable materials relating to Walla Walla University.

·         The purpose of collecting such records is to document the development and growth of the college, particularly of its functions of teaching and research, and the activities of the faculty, staff, student body, and alumni.

·         Institutional records are defined as all records, regardless of their form or format, whether published or unpublished, which are created, owned, used, or in the possession of administration, faculty, and staff in the performance of their official duties.

·         The archives staff cooperates with other departments to ensure that materials of historical value are collected and preserved.

·         The archives collection includes, but is not limited to, the following:

o   Records of the Board of Trustees and its committees.

o   Records of the administrative offices.

o   Records of the academic departments and their faculty including correspondence, minutes, memoranda and reports.

o   All theses and dissertations submitted to Walla Walla University.

o   Records from student organizations (particularly their charters and by-laws, minutes of meetings, annual reports of activities, and publications).

o   Selected papers and publications of institutions related to Walla Walla University.

o   Selected papers and publications of individuals related to Walla Walla University (e.g. faculty, alumni, and benefactors).

o   All campus publications issued by the University, its offices and departments, the faculty and the students, including newsletters, booklets, pamphlets, bulletins, directories, yearbooks, and alumni magazines.

·         The archives may collect unofficial records that document the history, development, and accomplishments of the institution and the city of College Place. Collecting such materials will be subject to space and staff limitations.

·         Based on space and room conditions, artifacts and ephemera will be accepted on an individual basis.

·         The archives does not collect

o   Student financial records

o   Admissions applications

o   Student transcripts/grades

o   Student medical and counseling records

o   Personnel records

·         Items that fall outside the collection policy will be passed along to other library and/or campus departments, Walla Walla Valley institutions, or interested individuals.

·         The decision to select and preserve records of historical value is the responsibility of the archival staff.
