Media Fridays

Jerry Hartman connects WWU community through media

Jerry Hartman, professor of film, TV, and media, started a new program called Media Fridays where he invites all WWU students and staff to learn about a different facet of media every week. Hartman’s goal is to use the interdisciplinary aspect of media to bring people together from many different departments.

Every Friday through March 4, from 12 to 12:50 p.m., Hartman invites all students and staff to CTC 123, and about 10 people have shown up to each event. During the January 14 meeting, participants learned about the regulations and misconceptions of flying private and commercial drones, and then headed out into the field for some recreational drone flying.

Upcoming topics include learning the basics of production, how to use a Sony mirrorless camera, how to create a 360º video, and how to apply for documentary grants. These skills are useful not only for students wanting to go into media full time, but also for those who want to pursue ministry, marketing, teaching, or many other careers.

Hartman explained that he wanted to make these events open to all and not just communication majors because often people get stuck in just one or two departments. Each department at WWU has so much to offer, and Hartman urges students and staff to come to Media Fridays and discover ways to be a part of the campus-wide culture while learning new skills.
