Counseling Process

Ethics and Professional Standards

We are committed to treating everyone we meet with respect and compassion.

The course of treatment that you engage in will be the result of a collaborative process with your counselor that will reflect your goals.  After we receive your application through the student portal, you will be matched with a counselor that best meets your identified needs. If, for whatever reason, you do not feel well matched with your counselor please share your concerns with her or him and we will try to find an effective resolution. 

The Washington State Counselor Crediting Act protects your health and safety by providing a complaint process against counselors who commit acts of unprofessional conduct. Counseling Sessions

In the first meeting, your counselor wants to get to know you and begin to define your goals for counseling as well as to determine where your needs can best be met. At times, the Counseling and Testing Center will help refer you for treatment that will be better suited for your needs.  If you are scheduled for treatment at the Counseling and testing Center your succeeding sessions will be devoted to finding ways of achieving your goals. The counseling conversation explores solutions and strategies for difficult problems.  The pace for these conversations is set collaboratively between you and your counselor.  

Counseling sessions can last up to fifty minutes and most students are able to meet their goals in about 8- 10 sessions. 

Cancellation

Your appointment time is specifically reserved for you. Should you need to cancel we require that you contact our office at least 24-hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. 

To reschedule or cancel an appointment call (509) 527-2147 or notify your counselor by email.  Failing to properly notify our office of missing your appointment will inhibit your ability to schedule for counseling sessions in the future.  Your counselor will share with you our "no-show" policy during your first session.

Is Counseling For Me?

  • I am anxious, worried, or nervous much of the time.
  • My sleeping or eating patterns have changed.
  • My moods change rapidly. I often feel like crying.
  • My relationships with other people often feel difficult.
  • I feel confused and have difficulty making decisions.
  • I can't decide on a major or career.
  • I feel that I am not functioning effectively in an important area of my life.
  • I am going through a significant change in my life.
  • I am experiencing difficulties due to the use of substances or behaviors that I am not able to manage.
  • I am curious to know more about myself and my relationships.
