Winter Quarter Transition

Walla Walla University is pleased to announce that we are planning to return to full-density on our College Place and Portland campuses for winter quarter 2020. Our graduate programs will continue operating online. Because this is a pandemic we recognize that plans could change. Here are the key points that we can share now. You likely have questions or need additional information to help you making plans in the coming days, and our team will continue to share information as it becomes pertinent or available.


Winter quarter schedule adjustments

The schedule for winter quarter will be adjusted  to accommodate for social distancing during the move-in process and to decrease the potential for infection from travel over winter break. 

  • Saturday, Jan 2—Hansen Hall will be open Saturday night to begin move-in on the Portland campus
  • Sunday, Jan. 3Monday, Jan. 4, 2021—Move in to the College Place residence halls by appointment
  • Monday, Jan. 4, 2021—Instruction begins for winter quarter on the Portland campus and for all graduate programs
  • Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021—Instruction begins for winter quarter on the College Place campus
  • Feb. 15, 2021—Mid-winter break has been reallocated in the schedule to accommodate the phased return

Starting winter quarter safely

We may start winter quarter with some sort of modified quarantine to help us minimize infection spread. We are currently working with local health officials on what that might look like, monitoring local, regional and national COVID-19 data to help us assess risk.

We will also utilize COVID-19 testing resources available to us to ensure a safe winter quarter start and to quickly detect COVID-19 throughout the quarter.


Class formats

To keep our classrooms safe and within guidelines for higher education institutions, we are aiming for a 50/50 split between in-person and online classes for our undergraduate students. We plan to host in-person labs. Unless otherwise communicated, classes will be presented as noted in the class schedule, which is currently being updated to reflect our winter quarter plans.

Housing arrangements

Every student living in the residence hall is required to have a roommate for winter quarter 2021. Current housing accommodations confirmed through Disability Support Services will remain in place. To apply for housing accommodations, you must submit a request by Sunday, Nov. 15. Roommate assignments will be based on the assignments originally made during the summer of 2020. Meske Hall will be taken offline so that it can be used for quarantine/isolation space during winter quarter.

Students who are already in the residence hall on the Portland campus will remain there; moving will not be necessary. Hansen Hall will be open starting Saturday night, Jan. 2, 2021.
