Evensong

WWU Department of Music to present Evensong, service of sacred piano and organ music, featuring WWU students

On Jan. 25 at 4:30 p.m. in the University Church, Kraig Scott, professor of music at Walla Walla University, and several of his students will present Evensong. This service of sacred music and readings is free and open to the public.

“Evensong is a beautiful way to end the Sabbath, and a tradition on this campus for about 50 years.” Scott said, “We present this quiet, sundown worship service about eight or nine times each year. It is always timed to coincide with sundown, so the start times vary. The format is simple – music interspersed with readings.

“Back in the late 1960s Evensong was begun by two professors, the organist Melvin K. West and Loren Dickinson. Thus the format has always featured organ music, but from time to time we include a wide range of other instruments and voices. Now I am the organist and Rodd Strobel, assistant professor of physical education, is the reader.”

The University Church is located at 212 SW 4th Street, College Place, Washington.
