‘Ada and the Engine’

WWU Drama kicks off 2019-20 season with play by Lauren Gunderson

The drama program at Walla Walla University begins the 2019-2020 season with “Ada and the Engine,” a recent offering from popular playwright Lauren Gunderson.

As the British Industrial Revolution dawns, young Ada Byron Lovelace (daughter of the flamboyant and notorious Lord Byron) sees the boundless creative potential in the “analytic engines” of her friend and soul mate Charles Babbage, inventor of the first mechanical computer. Ada envisions a whole new world where art and information converge—a world she might not live to see. A music-laced story of love, friendship, and the edgiest dreams of the future.

The cast of characters is composed of WWU students. The production features Macy Moon in the title role as Ada Byron Lovelace, Peter Thomsen as Charles Babbage, Jared Sexton as Lord Byron and Lord Lovelace, and Dorea Bradley as Anne Isabelle Byron and Mary Sommerville. The show is guest directed by Ellicia Elliott, artistic director of the Rude Mechanicals.

Many WWU students are also helping out behind the scenes for the production, including working on sets, props, costuming, makeup, and lighting.

There are five shows in total, with an 8 p.m. curtain on Nov. 9, 14, and 16, and a 2 p.m. curtain on Nov. 10 and 17. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $9 for students and seniors, and $8 for WWU students, faculty, and staff. They are available at the door or can be purchased online at drama.wallawalla.edu.

The play will be held on the WWU Donnie Rigby Stage, Canaday Technology Center, 306 SW 4th St., College Place.
