Myths About Counseling
Myth #1: You have to be "crazy" to go for counseling.
Fact: Only a very small percentage of our clients have had psychotic experiences. Most clients come to work through some problem areas of their life that are disrupting their lives in some way. Actually, instead of being "crazy", it is smart to utilize the resources available to you.
Myth #2: Going to counseling is a sign of weakness... "I should be able to handle this myself."
Fact: It actually takes a great deal of emotional strength to confront problem areas, seek help, and take responsibility for your life.
Myth #3: Counseling is too expensive for me.
Fact: That's true and not true! While the usual rate for counseling per hour is $75 to $125, Counseling and Testing Services provides this service free of charge to the students of Walla Walla University. It's another benefit of being at Walla Walla University.
Myth #4: "No one is going to tell me what to do!"
Fact: The task of the counselor is definitely not to tell you what to do. Instead, your counselor will help you explore solutions or directions. Once you have chosen your goal, your counselor will help you get there.
