The following are step by step instructions on how to properly create a working VPN using Windows 7 and Windows XP.

Windows 7

  1. Click the Start menu and type "VPN" and select Set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection

  1. You need to specify the internet address to point to as well as give the VPN a name. Input the following:
    1. Internet Address: vpn.wallawalla.edu
    1. Destination Name: WWU VPN
    1. Check Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later
    1. Click Next

  1. Put in your WWU username and password. Also make sure the Domain field reads SKYNET

  1. If successful you will see the following message:

Windows XP

 

  1. Click Start and open Control Panel
  1. Choose Network Connections

  1. Click File and select  New Connection

 

  1. When the connection wizard pops up click Next
  1. Choose Connect to the network at my workplace and click Next

 

  1. In the preceding window select Virtual Private Network connection and click Next

 

  1. Now we have to name our connection: WWU VPN

 

  1. Next we have to put in the address that the VPN connects to: vpn.wallawalla.edu

 

  1. Leave the use settings alone and click Next
  1. For ease of use select the "Add a shortcut…" checkbox. This adds the VPN connection to your desktop

 

  1. You should now have an icon on your desktop called "WWU VPN"
