Winter Education Complex Gets Significant Renovation
New Locker Rooms Will Benefit Students and Public

Athletic and guest facilities are getting a major upgrade in one of Walla Walla University’s most frequently used event venues. A major renovation at The Winter Education Complex, which houses the gymnasium and physical education facilities, will have new public restrooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as two team rooms.
Renovation Specialists, the general contractor, will complete the project by the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.
Several problems are being addressed with the renovation. The facility previously did not have adequate restroom facilities for men. The remodel will triple the previous number.
The lockers were old and were rusting. Donations have made it possible to replace the lockers with stainless hardware versions that are made to last. The new facilities also feature touch-less appliances and swim suit spinners.
Families with young children will be able to use one of the two new family restrooms located near the pool entrance. All facilities will be handicap accessible.
Rodd Strobel, instructor and facilities manager for the WEC, says the project, with an estimated cost between $800,000 to $900,000, shows a commitment by the university to improve an area that gets frequent student and visitor use.
“There are many people who visit this building and not anywhere else on campus. It is important that we make a good impression,” he said.
If fundraising is successful, Strobel hopes that a second phase of the renovation will begin next summer. The continued renovation includes installing a new wood floor in the gym and remodeling the Fourth St. entrance.
