Saying Goodbye to Former Board Chair

Bruce Johnston dies at age 83

By: Becky St. Clair

Johnston served as NPUC president and WWU board chair from 1986-1996.

Bruce Johnston, long‐time educator, evangelist, and church administrator, and alumnus of WWU, died quietly in Medford, Ore., early Monday morning, April 6, 2009. He was 83 years old.

Johnston received a degree in Theology from Walla Walla University in 1950.  During his time at then-Walla Walla College, Johnston met the love of his life, Marianette, and they were married soon after graduation.

After serving in various areas throughout the United States, and at Sarawak Mission in Borneo, the Johnstons found their way to the Pacific Northwest, where, after serving in several other capacities, Johnston accepted a position as president of the North Pacific Union Conference.

His position as president gave him the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Walla Walla University Board of Trustees.  He led the board for ten years between 1986 and his retirement in 1996.

Since retiring from an official church capacity, Johnston stayed active in evangelism, leading several groups on short‐term mission efforts to India and beyond.  His most recent endeavor was launching the MegaVoice project which distributes handheld solar audio units around the world with spiritual content translated into indigenous languages.

Johnston consistently gave to WWU, donating to things such as the annual fund, WWU’s student missions program, and the university’s most recent capital campaign, Faith in the Vision, which produced the new administration building.

His class, the Class of 1950, is the class behind a continuing sculpture project.  The class has been helping to raise funds for a beautiful sculpture that depicts the spirit of giving demonstrated by Christ.  Johnston was also the class agent for the Class of 1950.

In 2000, Johnston was named Walla Walla University Alumnus of the Year.

A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Medford Seventh‐day Adventist Church, located at 1900 Greenwood St. in Medford, OR. The church phone number is 541-772‐6021.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to: MegaVoice Project, North Pacific Union Conference, 5709 N. 20th Street, Ridgefield, WA 96842.
