Music Student Receives Full Grad School Scholarship
Kris Wettstein heads to Rice University
Walla Walla College senior Kris Wettstein has been awarded a full-tuition scholarship to Rice University in Houston, Texas. The scholarship will cover his tuition fees while he pursues a master’s degree in piano performance, a program which will begin in late August.
“When I visited the campus I was highly impressed,” says Wettstein. “That’s why I was ecstatic to hear that I wouldn’t be sleeping under a bench trying to make ends meet in the face of a daunting tuition bill.”
To qualify for the scholarship, the piano performance major was required to spend an entire day on the campus of Rice University, during which time he gave a 15-minute audition and took several tests. The scholarship was awarded based on the merit of his transcript, resume, and the results of the theory and history tests he took while on the university’s campus in February.
Rice University receives nearly 8,000 applications each year. Only 25 percent of those who apply are accepted.
Wettstein is currently under the tutelage of Leonard Richter at WWC and will graduate in June.
