I Cantori to Perform in Hawaii and Southern California

Dec. 14-23 Tour Includes Fourteen Performances

By: Camlynne Waring

I Cantori, the 43-member select choir of Walla Walla University directed by Kraig Scott, will perform 14 concerts in Hawaii and Southern California Dec. 14-23, 2012. In Hawaii, the choir will perform a concert at the historic Kawaiaho’o Church in Honolulu, once known as the “Westminter Abbey of the Pacific.”  Kawaiaho’o was the first Christian church to be built on the island of O‘ahu.  They will also sing at Hawaiian Mission Academy, the Central Honolulu Seventh-day Adventist church, and the Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa.

In California, the choir will perform at the Vallejo Drive Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Azure Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church, and participate in a vespers concert at the Loma Linda University Church that will be broadcast on the Loma Linda Broadcasting Network (see dates and details below).

“Walla Walla University has a long and storied tradition of emphasizing and fostering service,” says Scott, professor of music.  “Just consider the many generations of student missionaries sent from our school over the past 50 years.  Our choir trip is service of the same order.  It’s a short-term mission trip, but it’s in the same mold. We travel to give of ourselves, of our music, of our hard work, and of the university.”

In addition to performing at churches and academies, I Cantori will also sing at two nursing homes.

“The staff I have contacted are so excited and welcoming,” says Scott.  “They seemed very happy at the prospect of having a university choir sing at their facility.  Being able to sing and create beautiful music is a God-given gift.  What better way to honor God than to share it?”

Scott hopes that the music department, university, Seventh-day Adventism, and most importantly, God will be represented well on the tour.

According to Scott, the tour also benefits the singers, both musically and socially.  Choir members get to know each other better and learn to trust each other in ways otherwise impossible.

“Every tour with I Cantori has raised the level of singing within the choir. It seems never to fail – at the end of the tour the group is more cohesive, more focused, and singing at an entirely new and higher level. It is not the only reason to go on the road, but it sure is an exciting benefit,” Scott says.

Since the tour is an investment for the university and for students, the music department consulted with administration to determine the tour location.  “We wanted to be able to see some alumni and friends of the university in an area that the choir would enjoy,” says Scott.  “With 14 concerts in 11 days, the choir is going to be working hard, but we’ve coordinated the tour for them to see some of the beauties of both Hawaii and the California coast before they return home.”

I Cantori singers must audition to be a part of the group.  They are selected based on quality of voice and singing ability, and on their ability to learn music by reading and listening.

The choir enjoys a history of touring that began in 1929. Renamed I Cantori (Italian for “the singers”) in 1979, the ensemble has traveled extensively in the Pacific Northwest and western United States and has appeared in Canada, Russia and Romania.  The group’s repertoire focuses on classical church music, but includes a wide variety of mostly sacred styles. The choir regularly performs for the 2,000-member University Church and offers a major concert on campus each quarter.
