Search the online catalog. The online catalog searches all of the holdings of Peterson Memorial Library. Go to the library's home page. Choose "Catalogs" and then select "WWU Catalog". Once inside the catalog, you have the option of several different searches. Title Search - If you have the exact title of the book you are looking for. Author Search - If you have the name of an author, but do not know what books they have written. Keyword Search - The easiest way to search for a book on a certain topic. If your topic contains many words, separate those words by the word 'and' for better results. Subject Search - A more precise way to search for a book on a certain topic. This search uses Library of Congress subject headings to search for books on a certain topic. To search using subject search you must know the assigned Library of Congress subject heading. Once you have found your book, you need to write down all of the pertinent location information. Make certain you write down the location (ex. Reference, Main Stacks, Quarto) and the call number. For books located in the main stacks, call numbers .001 thru J80 are located on upper floor, call numbers J80 - QD262 are located on the main floor, and call numbers QD262 - ZA4480 are located on the lower Mezzanine floor. If a book is located in off-site shelving, currently checked out by another person or you simply cannot locate it on the shelves, you may visit the circulation desk to put in a hold or a search request.
To find an article in Peterson Memorial Library you will want to first locate a citation for an article appropriate to your topic. To do this you may use either the Print indexes (some located in South Reading Room), or the online databases. Once you have a citation be sure you write down all of the following information: journal title, article title, author, volume number, issue number, year of publication, and page numbers. To discover if we have access to a specific article you may take the name of the journal from the citation and use Periodicals A to Z to locate this journal. Periodicals A to Z lists all of the periodicals that we subscribe to, both electronically and in print. If the item is online, you may print it off from the computer. If the journal is held in Peterson Memorial Library, you will find it downstairs in Periodicals. All journals are arranged alphabetically by journal title. Some journals are located in storage or off-site. If the location is listed in the catalog as historical periodicals, SDA periodicals, off-site, or storage, please see a librarian for further assistance. If a journal is not available locally, you may request it through interlibrary loan. These guides are put together to help specific class sections. They will help students find print and electronic sources that relate to the coursework they are completing.

Primary Resources are resources that are a written account created by a person who was involved in the event or was alive during the time and may include such things as eyewitness accounts, newspaper articles, interviews, diaries, letters, and speeches. They may also include original research on a topic or an original gathering of statistics such as census reports or other government documents or public records.
These Journals contain articles that a panel of experts in the field have edited and approved. They may also be referred to as referred or scholarly publications. Many general databases will allow you to narrow your search to Peer or Scholarly journals only. Most subject databases cover mainly peer-reviewed publications. Library Information
