Staff Borrowing Policies
- Books may be checked out for three weeks. They are due back before closing time on the date shown on the card.
- Materials may be renewed over the phone by calling the circulation desk at (509) 527-2134, or online using your University ID and an individual pin number.
- To check what you currently have checked out and when it is due back you will need your name, your id number, and a pin number. This will allow you to see
what books you have checked out and when those items are due back.
Staff Interlibrary Loan Availability
Books at another campus - If the book you wish to read is located at one of our other campuses, please fill out an
interlibrary loan form for that item. In the comments put the campus
location of the book and the call number. We will request it for you to check out.
Books not in the catalogue - We do not own these books. If you wish to read a book not owned
by Peterson Memorial Library, please fill out an interlibrary loan form
with the title, author, and as much other information as you have. We will try to find this item in another library and request it for you.
Research Instruction
Do your students know how to search the library databases? Can they evaluate the quality of a
source they find on the web? Librarians working with students in the library often find that these
skills are lacking or need further development. An instruction session with a librarian will:
- Enable students to find library resources for class assignments.
- Develop students' critical thinking and evaluative abilities
- Acquaint students with whom to ask for help in the library and encourage them to do so.
- Integrate course content with information literacy skills. The librarian will connect the
objectives for the class to the professor's assigned coursework.
What can I do to help make the instruction session successful?
- Discuss your assignment and course objectives with the librarian.
- Have students working on topics so that they can apply the new concepts right away.
- Attend the session yourself so you know what they have been taught. Your presence also
underscores the importance of the concepts covered.
How do I schedule library instruction for my students?
- Contact Annette Melgosa at least three days in advance.
- Contact Gary Rittenbach to schedule a computer lab for the instruction if
the class is to meet in a lab. Large group instruction is not available in the library. Meeting in a computer
lab allows students to see search demonstrations performed and then immediately apply the
skills to their own searches.
Library Assignment Service
Library faculty possess experience in both teaching information literacy and assisting students in
finding and using library resources. Collaboration between library and teaching faculty in
designing assignments requiring use of library resources ensures that:
- Resources needed for the assignment are available in the library or through its databases.
- Library faculty are aware of the assignment and the professor's objectives.
- Materials are recommended for reserve if the class is large and the resources in the topic are limited.
To have your assignment reviewed by a librarian or to collaborate on designing an assignment contact
Christy Berry.
Collection Development Services
- The library book budget is divided amont the departments. Check with your Department Chair or Dean to find out how much your department
has allocated for you to spend on your courses.
- Faculty requests must be approved by the department chair and submitted to Mark Copsey, Technical Services Librarian,
for ordering and processing.
- To inquire regarding the amount currently in your departmental book fund contact June Waggoner.
- Librarians know the library collection and are experienced in teaching students to find resources. Their expertise, combined with the in-depth subject
knowledge of the professor, is important in book selection. Upon request, librarians can prepare a list of recommended books and other resources for a specific
topic. The faculty member may then choose which materials they wish to have the library purchase with the faculty members' departmental funds. Remember,
the library needs the approval of the department chair or dean before it can purchase the materials. Contact Annette Melgosa if you wish us to
develop such a list.
