Research Instruction
- Enable
students to find library resources for class assignments.
- Develop
students’ critical thinking and evaluative abilities.
- Acquaint
students with whom to ask for help in the library and encourage them to do
so.
- Integrate
course content with information literacy skills. The
librarian will connect the objectives for the class to
the professor’s assigned
coursework.
What can I do to help make the instruction session successful?
- Discuss
your assignment and course objectives with the librarian.
- Have
students working on topics so that they can apply the new concepts right
away.
- Attend
the session yourself so you know what they have been taught. Your presence
also underscores the
importance of the concepts covered.
How do I schedule library instruction for my students?
- Contact Annette Melgosa
at least three days in advance.
- Contact
Gary Rittenbach to schedule a computer lab
for the instruction if the class is to meet in a lab. Large
group instruction is not
available in the library. Meeting
in a computer lab allows students to see search demonstrations performed
and then immediately apply the skills to their own searches.
Request a Customized Course Web Site
What content can I expect to see on course web site customized for my class?
- Material
that supports and enriches the course content conveniently located in one
place.
- Links
to full text articles taken from library databases.
- Citations
to articles held in print in the Periodicals Department. Students may
take the citations from
the web site and then find the article in the Periodicals Department.
- Books
and quality web sites. Feel free
to examine web
sites currently supporting courses. To request a customized web
site for your course, email your course
syllabus to Annette Melgosa two weeks in
advance.

Collection Development Services
- The
library book budget is divided among the departments. Check with your
Department Chair or
Dean to find out how much your department has allocated for you to spend
on your courses.
- Faculty
requests must be approved by the department chair and submitted to
Mark Copsey, Technical Services
Librarian, for ordering and processing.
- To
inquire regarding the amount currently in your departmental book fund
contact June Waggoner.
- Librarians
know the library collection and are experienced in teaching students to
find resources. Their expertise,
combined with the in-depth subject knowledge of the professor, is
important in book selection. Upon
request, librarians can prepare a list of recommended books and other
resources for a specific topic. The faculty member may then choose which
materials they wish to
have the library purchase with the faculty members’ departmental funds.
Remember, the library needs the approval of the department chair or dean
before it can purchase the materials. Contact
Annette Melgosa if you
wish us to develop such a list.
- See
the Collection
Development Policy for further guidelines.
Requesting a Reserve Title
Fill out a request form. A Reserve Request Form is available
at the circulation desk. Alternatively, you may view and print the PDF
Request Form and bring it to the Access Services Technician.
Find the item. You should present the desired book(s) or article(s) with the Reserve Request Form to the Access Services Technician. Reserve items may include library materials as well as items from your personal library.
Obtain Permissions. Permission from the publisher must be obtained for articles on reserve for multiple quarters. The publisher's letter must accompany any article being placed on reserve for a second or subsequent time.
Questions? Contact the Access Services Technician (ext. 2191 or email).
Assigning Library Use
Check Library Availability. Check the library catalog and
periodicals list to ensure a title is available before preparing an assignment.
Students become frustrated when journal titles or book titles listed on an assignment
are not available through print or electronic sources in the library. Librarians
are happy to check for you and suggest additional titles that may be useful.
Ensure Student Success. Discuss your objectives for library use assignments with the Reference Librarian. Student questions will be answered more successfully if we are aware of desired learning outcomes.
Reserve titles with high demand. If your class is large and the resources on the topic may be limited, please place a list on reserve. Even if you do not believe every student in the class needs to look at every title, one student may check out two or three titles for an entire month and make success more difficult for their classmates.
Collaborate with Librarians. The Reference and Instruction librarians will be happy to collaborate on library use assignments. Instruction sessions, reference desk assistance, and conferences with individual students may be a part of assignment collaboration.
Contact the Library. To have your assignment reviewed by a librarian or to collaborate on designing an assignment, contact Christy Berry or Annette Melgosa.
