Distance Education Students
|
Although you may not be attending classes on the College Place campus, you are still an important part of the Walla Walla University family. At the Walla Walla University Library, we want to facilitate your studies and research as much as possible, in spite of the distance that may lie between your place of study and the physical library building. Thanks to technology, we are able to offer many of the same services for our non-University Place students. You may:
Some of these features may be from vendors that require access to be restricted to current students, faculty, and staff of Walla Walla University. You may be required to login using your network ID and password before you may use services. For more information visit the Off Campus Access Page. Find Journal Articles To find an article at the library you will need to locate a citation for an article covering your topic. To do this you may use the online databases. From the library's home page, click on "Databases". You may view our article databases by title or by subject. Select a database with journals that cover your topic and perform a search to find article citations. Once you have a citation be sure you write down all of the following information: journal title, article title, author, volume number, issue number, year of publication, and page numbers. To view and print some full-text articles you may need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. If the database you are in does not have an article available full text, write down or print off the pertinent citation information including journal title. You may be able to use this information to locate the title elsewhere. For articles not available full text, search Periodicals A to Z using the journal title to locate our access. Periodicals A to Z lists the periodicals that we subscribe to, whether it is electronically or in a print collection. If the item is online, you may print it. If the journal is held at your local branch, you will find it arranged alphabetically by journal title. If the journal is in print at a different branch or not in our libraries, you should request a copy through interlibrary loan. Find Books To find books in the Walla Walla University Libraries, search the online
catalog. The catalog may also be accessed from anywhere on the library web
site by using the drop down menus above. The WWU Library catalog is the first
option. Once inside the catalog, you have several search options. Title Search - Search for an exact title.
Author Search - View all books available by a specific author. Keyword Search - A search on a specific topic. Multiple words separated by the word 'and' yields better results. Subject Search - A more precise way to search for a book on a certain topic. This search uses Library of Congress subject headings to search for books on a certain topic. To search using subject search you must know the assigned library of congress subject heading. Within the catalog, you may choose to limit items to only what is available within your local library. After performing a search, use the 'Limit this Search' option at the top of your screen. You may then choose to limit by location to 'Portland Library', 'Billings Library', etc. Once you have found your book, you need to write down all of the pertinent location information, including call number. Make certain you write down the call number. If a book is not available at your branch, you may request we ship it to you via interlibrary loan. Please enter the location of the book and the call number in the comment section of the Interlibrary Loan form when you request the item. If the book is not available at any of our libraries, you should fill out an interlibrary loan request for the item. Do you live in Washington or Oregon? If you live in Washington or Oregon and commute or take classes online, you are eligible for Summit Borrowing. You may search the Summit Catalog for books. You may also have books from our College Place or Portland campus libraries shipped to a Summit Library near you for pickup. When you request an item, you should change the pick-up institution from the default "Walla Walla University" to a Summit library near you. Talk to a librarian for more details on this program. Using Interlibrary Loan for Materials Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows you to request materials from other libraries. If we are sending the item directly from the College Place campus, you should allow at least a week. If the item is coming from one of the other campuses or from another library, you should allow up to three weeks for the request to be processed. We will mail books to your local branch campus. Each will have a specific date due. If you need a renewal or extension, please contact your local library or the interlibrary loan department at least three days before the book is due. We will fax articles to your local campus library and you may pick up the articles there. Generally, articles are yours to keep. For further information regarding ILL policies and for ILL forms, please see the Interlibrary Loan page. At this time we are unable to send circulating items directly to patrons. If you are taking classes online and do not physically attend any of our branch campus locations, please contact the interlibrary loan office (509) 527.2159 to discuss options for obtaining print material.
