Donations to Aviation Program
Posted May 21, 2008
The aviation program was the lucky recipient of a ATC-810 flight training device recently. This flight training device (FTD) was valued at $18,000. It replicates a Piper Chieftain and can be used for multi-engine, instrument, and high performance aircraft training. It will also be great for interview simulation preparation because many companies use ACT-810s or similar FTDs for their "sim rides."
The ATC-810 joins the Frasca TruFlight FTD the aviation program purchased last December. They hope to have both FTDs installed and online by the end of the month. While the new flight training options are exciting, the goal is not to replace actual flight time in the program's aircraft but to supplement flight training. (More technical information here.)
The program's fundraising total is currently $265,000 putting it into phase three of the project: to replace and upgrade the fleet. They hope to raise the remaining $135,000 before the beginning of the 2008-09 school year.

Donations to Automotive Program
Posted March 11, 2008
The automotive program was the willing recipient of donations totaling $8500 not too long ago. $1000 was earmarked for lab floor refinishing and the rest was for use at the program's discretion. $3300 of the discretionary funds have been used to purchase two used above-ground, twin-post lifts to replace the two single-post lifts that they can no longer get service parts for. They have also purchased two barely used refrigerant recycling/recharging machines that will be used by both Wolfpack Automotive and the program's Climate Control class.
They are still trying to raise about $100,000 more to purchase a world-class, lab-quality all-wheel drive dynamometer. They have already gotten a $36,000 price break on it from the manufacturer but will need to raise the rest. If they are unable to raise enough for the dynamometer, they will use the funds that have been raised to upgrade their scan tool.

Aviation Club Annual Fieldtrip
Posted March 19, 2007
Aviation Club members traveled around northwestern Oregon January 19 through 21, 2007 visiting several places on their annual fieldtri
p. Thirteen students and their chaperone began the trip with a visit to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon where they saw many interesting aircraft including the huge Spruce Goose and a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress. One thing they learned is that when Howard Hughes was going to do a high speed taxi test of the Spruce Goose he requested that thousands of beach balls be placed in the plane so in case something happened to the structure it would not sink.
On Sabbath the group visited Vista House at Crown Point and Multnomah Falls where they enjoyed the outdoors despite the cold weather. They spent the evening in downtown Portland exploring the shopping areas and eating at the Macaroni Grill.
Their tour of the Horizon base at the Portland International
Airport on Sunday included going inside the hanger where they keep the aircraft, seeing the maintenance operation and the dispatch unit, and going inside one of the aircraft that was down for maintenance. Inside the aircraft they got to observe a new pilot practicing some of the checklist flows with his instructor. They also got to see one of the dispatchers do a flight plan dispatch for an airplane and were shown the weather packet, fuel planning, and route the plane was taking.
The club's next major activity is the spot-landing contest tentatively planned for May 6 at Martin Field. For more information about the contest contact Laura Dickerson at DickLa@wwc.edu.

Faculty and Staff Reunion
Posted September 25, 2006
Former faculty and staff of the Department of Technology (formerly Industrial Technology) journeyed back to WWC on July 23 for a reunion. Over 50 people came from around the U.S. to the event planned by Garth (formerly an electronics instructor at WWC) and Gil Fisher and hosted by the current department faculty and staff.
The event included punch and homemade cookies, tours of department facilities (including the flight center), dinner, and a lot of reminiscing. There were also three slide shows, put together by Linda Nelson, Elaine Hinshaw, and Chet Blake, which covered current department items, department history, and reminiscing.
The event was a success, both for previous faculty and staff, who got to see each other and how the department has grown and changed, and current faculty and staff, who got a feel for their own department’s heritage and got to show their predecessors they have left their department in good hands.
