About the Cover |
A pillar, or column, is a slender, freestanding architectural element that serves a load-bearing or stabilizing function. Several pillars may support a horizontal element, such as a roof, creating a sheltered space underneath. Three unfluted Greek Ionic columns have supported the portico at the front of Walla Walla College's Administration Building since 1919. The scrolled capitals that join each column to the horizontal roof support, a gift of the class of 1990, are a more recent addition. Used in Greek and Roman temples and public buildings, pillars appear in a symbolic sense in Proverbs 9:1: "Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars." Strong, graceful, and representative of our pursuit of learning, these columns invite students to seek knowledge of themselves, their world, and their God. --Nancy Cross, Associate Professor of English |
