WWC students create website

for local Red Cross chapter

Walla Walla College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Blue Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross launched a new website this week.

“We’re very excited about the new website,” says Terry Hackney, executive director of the Blue Mountain Chapter. “It will help us communicate better with the community.”

The chapter’s old website contained outdated information and lacked interactive capabilities. As part of a SIFE project this year, a small group of WWC students worked with the chapter to create a more professional, interactive site. The chapter also needed to make improvements to its information systems and the students provided advice and technical support.

Students designed, built and wrote copy for the website with input from Hackney. “The most challenging part of the project was figuring out what information needed to be included on the website,” says Christa Mowry, freshman computer engineering major and main designer for the project.

“The students were creative and very responsive to our needs,” says Hackney. “It’s been a great way to connect with local students and I hope it gave them some experience working with clients.”

The website now contains basic information about the Blue Mountain Chapter and a list of classes and services offered. Another helpful feature is the ability to register for classes online and pay with a credit or debit card. People may also donate directly to the chapter through the secure website. “We hope this will make it easier for donors to contribute,” says Hackney.

More features will soon be added, including a calendar of events and classes, local chapter news, a monthly newsletter and the ability to register online to give blood or volunteer with the Red Cross.

SIFE is an international organization designed to promote local business growth and provide students with valuable real-world experience. There were more than 20 core members in WWC’s team this year, but 100 others participated in various projects.
