While on Volunteer Assignment

Walla Walla College student Brandon Moor died Jan. 31 near Dalton, Ga., when the car he was driving struck a stalled vehicle in the middle of a freeway. The 21-year-old theology major was killed instantly.

Moor was working as a volunteer assistant chaplain for Georgia-Cumberland Academy, in Calhoun, Ga., on a one-year assignment. Moor is from Battleground, Wash., but has family roots in the Walla Walla area.

The campus chaplain’s office became a gathering place for grieving students the day of the accident. WWC students, faculty and staff also gathered at Conard Chapel that evening. “We remembered Brandon through stories and we prayed in small groups for his family and friends,” says Lois Blackwelder, campus chaplain.

The staff from Big Lake Youth Camp, where Moor worked, was also invited to a prayer service with the camp directors in Heubach Chapel.

Moor was remembered as a kind and spiritual person. His teachers remembered him as a very bright and committed student. WWC student Kevin Ames, junior graphic design major, created a memory book for Moor’s family compiled of messages from people whose lives he touched.

Funeral services were held Feb. 5, at the Meadowglade Seventh-day Adventist Church in Battleground, Wash. The graveside service was held Feb. 7, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in College Place, Wash.
