Steel Band to Perform Again at Popular Venue

Guest Artist Tom Miller to Perform

Tom Miller is this year's featured performer.

The Walla Walla University Steel Band returns to the Gesa Power House Theatre on Sunday, April 27, at 7 p.m. to reprise their sold-out performance last April with guest artists Gary Gibson and Mike Agidius. This year the group will be joined by Tom Miller, director of the University of Denver steel drum program, and also a performer, composer, arranger, and educator. The concert will feature a number of tunes composed by Miller as well as many pieces published by his company, Pan Ramajay. Productions.

Miller is one of the most respected and sought after steel drum soloists and clinicians today.  He has performed worldwide with his own steel drum group as well as notable pan masters.  Miller has added his unique style of percussive touch to numerous recordings covering a variety of musical styles with artists such as Grammy award winners Allison Krause and the late John Denver, blues sensation  Charlie Musselwhite, Allison Brown, and Venezuelan songstress Maria Marquez.  Miller’s playing has also been featured on film scores for movies, advertisements, computer games and more.

Walla Walla University’s Steel Band has been in existence since 2002 and has toured the West Coast twice, the East Coast four times, and also the island of Bermuda. The band has also performed with world-class artists Victor Provost and Gary Gibson. During last year’s performance in the Power House Theatre, guest artist Gary Gibson told the audience that he considered the WWU Steel Band one of the best collegiate steel bands in the nation.

The musical styles featured in the concert will be Caribbean (calypso, soca, cha-cha), samba, jazz, and rock. Tickets are $12 for balcony seating and $15 for seats on the floor. All proceeds will go toward WWU Steel Band scholarships and recruitment of steel drummers to the program.

Tickets are available at the Gesa Power House website
