graduates urged to become pilgrims

The sun broke through the clouds periodically Sunday morning as Walla Walla College celebrated commencement ceremonies with more than 300 graduating students on Centennial Green.

Before presenting students with their diplomas, college President Jon Dybdahl bestowed an honorary doctor of letters degree upon Charles Bradford, former president of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists.

Senior Class President Steve Sanders, a finance major, described the class gifts of Bibles for the Walla Walla College Church pews and a chandelier to be placed in the college’s new Administration Building when construction is complete.

The commencement address, entitled “Circling the Public Square,” was presented by Charles Sandefur, president of Adventist Development and Relief Agency, who suggested that the graduates think of themselves as pilgrims – a person on a passionate journey of grace toward making a difference in this world.

He spoke of working with AIDS-afflicted children in Africa and other projects connected with the aid agency, saying, “Those are the times one finds it is possible to make a difference.”

“I look at you, and you quench my thirst for hope,” he said, urging the graduates to remain pilgrims. “Don’t make me thirsty again.”
