By: Lisa Krueger
Shane Claiborne will be speaking about what it means to live and serve like Jesus.
Walla Walla University welcomes special Weekend of Worship guest speaker Shane Claiborne to our campus Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14.
An author, speaker, and social activist, Claiborne will be speaking on the topic of his book, “Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical.” He will be presenting different messages throughout the weekend, starting on Friday night at the 8 p.m. vespers, then at both University Church services on Sabbath morning (9:45 and 11:30) with a special Q&A time during The Awakening at Village Hall at 10:30 a.m.
Claiborne writes and travels extensively, speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus. He is featured in the DVD series “Another World Is Possible” and is the author of the several books including “The Irresistible Revolution,” “Jesus for President,” and “Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers.”
Claiborne graduated from Eastern University, and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. His ministry experience is varied, from a 10-week stint working alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta, to a year spent serving at Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago. During the recent war in Iraq, he spent three weeks in Baghdad with the Iraq Peace Team. Claiborne is also a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia.
The purpose of the Weekend of Worship is to challenge our campus and church community to "Bring Jesus to Life...for the world," says Campus Chaplain Paddy McCoy. “During spring quarter, we focus on what we can do as a campus community to answer the great commission given in Matthew 28, which says ‘go into all the world, making disciples.’
"This way of living is revolutionary, but not in a new way; rather, in the way of the One who challenged the status quo and continually challenged us to upside-down thinking [the first shall be last, the greatest among you is the least, if you want to gain your life you must be willing to lose it]. This is the way of the Kingdom of God.”
