Gospel Choir Concert Highlights Black History Weekend

Events Scheduled for Feb. 3-4

A choir from Sharon Seventh-day Adventist Church in Portland, Ore., sang in the 2011 festival.

Gospel choirs from the Northwest come together for “Total Praise: A Festival of Choirs,” a concert to be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m.

This is the third annual choir concert featuring Black music, particularly African American music. Each of the choirs will perform one or two songs for the concert and then they will sing as one mass choir, both at the concert and at the 11:30 a.m. University Church service. Featured songs include traditional favorites such as “Oh Happy Day” and Richard Smallwood’s “Total Praise.”

The concert is one of several events scheduled for Walla Walla University’s Feb. 3-4 Black History Weekend.

The weekend begins with an 8 p.m. Friday vespers program featuring a dramatic presentation of the heavenly banquet scene, featuring historic figures in African American history.  The event will be presented by WWU’s Black Student Christian Forum.

On Sabbath, Henry M. Wright is the guest speaker for the 11:30 a.m. service. Wright is the pastor of the Community Praise Center, Alexandria Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Alexandria, Va. He is well-known for his inspiring and hope-filled words.

For the 9:30 a.m. service, Terrance Taylor will present the message. Taylor is a 2006 Walla Walla University graduate and is the pastor for the Pasco Ephesus Adventist Church in Pasco, Wash.

These services will be followed by an international potluck in the Fellowship Hall of the University Church.
