Commencement Ceremony to Cap June 8-10 Graduation Activities

The commencement ceremony honors the academic achievement of graduates.

Walla Walla University’s commencement ceremony will be held Sunday, June 10 at 8:30 a.m. on the Centennial Green.

The conferring of degrees at the ceremony is the highlight of the event.  During the ceremony, honored faculty and staff will also receive recognition.

The commencement speaker is Andrea Trusty King. King is the senior pastor at the Imani Praise Fellowship in Moreno Valley, Calif.  An acclaimed speaker, King is also the vice president and co-founder of Brighter Hope Ministries, Inc. Brighter Hope began in 2002 as a radio program, but has expanded to television, print,
The Sunday morning event caps a weekend of celebration activities.

Friday, June 8
8 p.m. – Consecration, University Church
The senior class will present the evening vespers program. Chad Angassan, senior theology major, and Bruce Toews, professor of business, will be the speakers.

Afterward – Graduate Reception, Conard Hall Courtyard
The residence hall deans invite graduates, their families and faculty and staff to a reception immediately following the Consecration service. In the event of inclement weather, the reception will be held in Kellogg Hall.

Saturday, June 9
9:30 a.m. – FirstServe Baccalaureate, University Church
FirstServe is a more relaxed service featuring contemporary praise music. The speaker for the service will be Max Torkelsen II, president of the North Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and chair of the Walla Walla University Board of Trustees.

10:30 a.m. – Sabbath School, Various Locations
Consult the University Church bulletin (available at the door and online at for a list of Sabbath School options offered and for meeting times and locations.

11:45 a.m. – Second Service Baccalaureate, University Church
Second Service is a more traditional church service. Max Torkelsen II, speaker at the first baccalaureate service, will also be the speaker for this service.

3 p.m. – Teacher Dedication, Walla Walla Valley Academy Auditorium
Special dedication service to honor those graduating in Education.

4 p.m. – Nurses’ Pinning, University Church
Special dedication service to honor WWU’s Nursing students. Reception immediately following in the Fellowship Hall.

5 p.m. – Theology Senior Dedication, Heubach Chapel (University Church)
Special dedication service to honor graduating theology and religion majors.

6 p.m. – Strawberry Dessert Reception, Fine Arts Center Lawn
The senior class officers invite graduates and their families to enjoy strawberries, ice cream and time together. In the event of inclement weather, the reception will be held in the Alumni Gymnasium.

7 p.m. – Master’s Degree Hooding Ceremony, Walla Walla Valley Academy Auditorium
Friends and family of master’s degree candidates are invited to this celebration of achievement. A reception will follow.

8 p.m. – Evensong, University Church
This sunset service features organ music and the spoken word and is presented by Kraig Scott, professor of music, and Montgomery Buell, associate professor of history.

Sunday, June 10
8:30 a.m. – Commencement, Centennial Green
Andrea Trusty King will present the commencement address.
Regrettably, there is no adequate alternative facility in which to conduct Commencement in the event of inclement weather. If rain is forecast, please come prepared for it. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Items or notes left on chairs to save seats may be removed. Thank you for your cooperation.
